The Power of a Dog’s Nose Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell. With over 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about 6 million in humans, dogs can detect scents at incredibly low concentrations. This remarkable ability has long been harnessed in fields like law enforcement, search and rescue, and now, pest detection. Termite detection dogs are trained to identify the unique scent of termites and their pheromones. Their training involves reward-based systems that teach them to signal their handlers when they detect live termite activity.
